ALBA MIKA
OPTOMETRIST I BSc I BOPTOM (HONS) l TPA
Alba Mlika holds a Bachelor of Optometry with First Class Honours from the University of Auckland. She is fluent in English, Italian, and Albanian.
During her fourth year at university, Alba undertook an honours research project under the supervision of Grant Watters. Her outstanding work earned her the prestigious first place in the New Zealand College of Optometrists Award for the best research presentation.
Alba’s passion for optometry was ignited in high school during a memorable biology class that involved a cow’s eye dissection. She was captivated by the intricate workings of the eye and how its components collaborate to create the gift of sight. This initial spark of interest deepened as she observed the real-world impact of optometry through her cousin's career, who transitioned from an optometrist at Mortimer Hirst to pursuing ophthalmology.
Recognising her potential, the University of Auckland awarded Alba the Top Achievers Scholarship to study Biomedical Science. After her first year, she was invited to join the School of Optometry, where she solidified her commitment to the profession.
Throughout her optometry education, Alba actively participated in community service initiatives, including conducting low vision screenings in South Auckland and vision screenings for children in local schools. Her externships in Whangarei and Whakatane provided her with invaluable hands-on experience, particularly in managing keratoconus cases, which sparked a profound interest in the condition.
Beyond her professional pursuits, Alba is a dedicated artist with a passion for oil painting, pottery, baking, beach walks, and reformer Pilates. Her artistic talents have been recognised with an Art Scholarship in 2019 and the esteemed Pat Hanly Creativity Award in 2018, presented by Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki.
Alba's unique blend of skills and experiences makes her a compassionate and committed optometrist, as well as a creative individual dedicated to the arts.
